Genevro Honored as PSU's top male scholar-athlete
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State DuBois men’s basketball point guard Kevin “Kez” Genevro has been named the University’s John C. Egli Outstanding Male Scholar-Athlete for 2007-08. This honor is given to one male and one female student per year from the 1,400 student-athletes who participated in one or more of the ten varsity sports offered at the fifteen locations of the Penn State University Athletic Conference.
Genevro, a 2006 graduate of Elk County Catholic from St. Marys, PA, is a Mechanical Engineering major, compiling a 3.42 cumulative grade point average in four semesters. A member of the PSUAC All-Conference team for 2007 and 2008, Genevro was a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-American Honorable Mention for 2007, and was named a USCAA All-American for 2008.
“I am very proud of Kevin, and I cannot think of a more deserving student to be awarded this honor”, said Dr. Anita McDonald, PSU DuBois Chancellor. “He has shown himself to be a true role model, both on the court and in the classroom.” DuBois Men’s Basketball head coach Dave Bennett agrees. “Kez works hard on his academics and that has a positive influence on the underclassmen because they see the best player on the team as a true student-athlete.”
The Egli Award was established in honor of Assistant Professor John Egli in recognition of his distinguished service to Penn State University as a student, athlete, faculty member, and coach. As the first Commonwealth Campus Coordinator of Athletics, Mr. Egli was responsible for the establishment, growth, and development of the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference, now known as the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC).
Genevro will be honored along with female Egli Award recipient Jill Chocallo of PSU Wilkes-Barre at the PSUAC Awards Luncheon on April 21st at the Penn Stater Conference Center in State College.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State DuBois men’s basketball season came to an end on the Bryce Jordan Center court Friday afternoon as the DuBois Nittany Lions fell to Penn State New Kensington 54-62. The top-seeded New Kensington squad held a slim lead through most of the first half, but saw DuBois begin to rally as the second half of action drew on. The DuBois men whittled New Ken’s 15-point lead down to 3 points with two minutes left in the game, but then a spectacular defensive play by New Ken All-American Jeremy Hurt gave New Kensington the boost it needed to pull away to a 62-54 win at the final buzzer.
Hurt’s defensive play in the clutch was just one highlight of an excellent overall defense strategy from New Kensington, as the team effectively shut down DuBois’ big guns. Senior Dylan Howard, who went 7-for-11 on 3-pointers during Monday night’s Elite 8 win over PSU Hazleton, was limited to 6 points on the day against New Kensington on Friday. Kevin Genevro was similarly stifled, carrying only 9 points for the game. Freshman Josh Salter led the scoring for DuBois with 17 points on the day. Senior Jonny Songer added 12 points and 11 rebounds in the semifinal. New Kensington’s Jeremy Hurt led his team’s scoring with 14 points.
Penn State DuBois finishes the 2007-08 season with an overall record of 15-and-15, including a second consecutive trip to the USCAA National Championship tournament and a Final 4 appearance at the PSUAC playoffs. New Kensington went on to drop the championship match to PSU Abingdon 58-76 on Saturday afternoon.
The DuBois Nittany Lions will kick off the 2008-09 season of PSUAC play on Monday, December 1st, 2008 at home against Western Division rival PSU Beaver.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Me. -- The Penn State DuBois Nittany Lions rounded out their second consecutive appearance at the 2008 USCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship with a 73-81 loss to Hesser College on Saturday. The fifth-seeded Blue Devils took an early lead in the first half and never ceded control of the game, leading 39-31 at the halftime buzzer. DuBois mounted a late-game offensive surge to bring the score within one point with five minutes left to play, but Hesser would proceed to make a five-point run to pull away as the clock wound down. The Lions would go on to score only three more points in the remaining five minutes as the Blue Devils padded their lead by two more points to end the game with a 81-73 lead. 2/29/2008 - Penn State DuBois Player hits 1,000th career point
SOUTH PORTLAND, Me. -- The Penn State DuBois Men's Basketball program saw one of its student-athletes achieve a remarkable milestone Thursday night, as senior Dylan Howard scored his one-thousandth career point during the second half of the Nittany Lions' loss to Southern Maine Community College in the first round of the 2008 USCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship in South Portland, Maine. “I am very happy for Dylan, and very proud of him tonight,” said head coach Dave Bennett. “Dylan has been a model athlete for our program for the past four years, and we're pleased that he's been able to reach this milestone.” Bennett noted that this was the first time in the history of the Penn State DuBois athletics program that an athlete had hit the 1,000-point mark.
Howard and his parents were honored by the Penn State DuBois coaches, staff and fans, as well as SMCC Athletic Director and USCAA Tournament Director Matt Richards before the start of Friday afternoon's second-round game against New Hampshire Tech Institute. “I want to congratulate my fellow-teammates”, said Howard, “because this couldn't have happened without them.” He also expressed his gratitude to the men's coaching staff for their role in helping him develop his game and grow as a player during his time at Penn State DuBois. Howard will graduate in May with a degree in marketing, and hopes to return to the Penn State DuBois men's program next year as an assistant coach.
Penn State DuBois will play in the third round of the USCAA Division II Men's Championship Saturday morning before returning to the Keystone State to take on PSUAC Elite 8 opponent PSU Hazleton on Monday evening.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Me – The Penn State DuBois Nittany Lions fell to the second-seeded Southern Main Community College Seawolves in the first round of the 2008 USCAA Division II Men's Basketball championship Thursday night in a hard-fought 76-82 loss. The SMCC Seawolves picked up momentum, however, and managed to take a 30-28 lead in the final seconds of the first half. After re-taking the lead at the beginning of the second half, the DuBois squad fell behind and were never able to recover, as SMCC went on to outscore the Lions 52-48 in the last twenty minutes. 2/14/08 -- A pair of road wins in Uniontown last night once again demonstrated that the Penn State DuBois men’s and women’s basketball teams are continuing to hone their late-season play. The DuBois Lady Lions won the 6pm opener against PSUAC Western Division rival PSU Fayette 72-58, with four former District 9 players all reaching double figures on the evening. Freshman Missy Aul (St. Marys) hit the double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Courtney Shenkle (DuBois Area) with a career high 15 points. Also posting double figures were Nichele Hoover (DuBois Central) with 14 points and Kara Carnovale (St. Marys Public) chipping in 13 points. The Lady Lions have won 3 out of their last 5 games—all on the road—and now have an overall record of 9-9. They return to action with their final regular-season match against PSU Beaver at 1:00pm.
Not to be outdone, the DuBois men’s squad came out and took the nightcap 80-75. Senior Dylan Howard led the way with 22 points, five rebounds and six 3-pointers. Kevin Genevro pitched in with 16 points and 8 assists. Coming off a tough road loss to PSU Hazleton on Sunday, the DuBois men were ready for a Western Division win as they turn their attention to hosting PSU Beaver on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm. Saturday is Senior Day at Penn State DuBois, when the Athletic Department will honor the senior student-athletes from all of DuBois’ intercollegiate sports: women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cross-country, and men’s basketball. The ceremony will take place before the commencement of the men’s game at 3:00pm in the Multipurpose Building Gymnasium.

2/12/08 -- On Monday afternoon (2/11), the Penn State DuBois men’s basketball program received an official bid to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association’s 2008 Division II Men’s Basketball Championship in South Portland, Maine, February 27-March 1. For the second year in a row, the DuBois Nittany Lions will be making their presence known at the USCAA tournament at Southern Maine Community College.
DuBois head coach Dave Bennett is proud of the hard work his squad has put in, and the opportunity they have to compete at the national level again this year. “We are very excited to have an opportunity to compete in the National Tournament. This is a great honor and will be an excellent experience for the players in our program. I am very happy for the guys because the hard work, dedication and sacrifice they have shown has helped us meet one of our team goals.”
But Bennett is mindful that the national championship bid comes along while there is still unfinished business in the state conference. That reality was brought into sharp focus over the past week with a 1-and-1 PSUAC record in the past two games (an 87-70 win over PSU Greater Allegheny on Thursday and a tough 78-86 loss to northern division leader PSU Hazleton on Sunday.) “We need to stay focused because we have 3 difficult [PSUAC] conference games over the next week and a half,” said Bennett. “Once the playoffs begin, its a new season where every team is 0-0, and I think our players will welcome the challenge.”
The DuBois men travel to PSU Fayette on Wednesday afternoon, and then host PSU Beaver in the Multipurpose Building gymnasium at home on Saturday at 3:00pm.

2/12/08 -- As the 2007-08 women’s basketball season comes down to the last few games, the Penn State DuBois Lady Lions are taking pride in the hard work they’ve put into their season, and are keeping the pressure on as they set their sights on the postseason. The ladies’ work ethic was showcased on Thursday night (2/7), as the DuBois women fought back from an early 12-point deficit against PSU Greater Allegheny, coming within just a few points as the game went on, and finishing the game just 5 points down, 55-60 at the final buzzer. A tough road game on Sunday against PSU Hazleton (L -- 59-76) saw the DuBois Lady Lions’ record drop to 8-9 overall.
DuBois looks to improve to a 7-8 conference record this week as the Lady Lions head to Uniontown on Wednesday evening to face a 3-9 (PSUAC) Fayette squad. Then a tough match follows on Saturday as DuBois hosts PSUAC Western Division leader PSU Beaver at 1:00pm. A win on Wednesday would place the DuBois women in line for a wild-card slot for the PSUAC playoffs in March.

2/7/08 -- As the 2007-08 varsity basketball season comes down to the wire, both DuBois varsity squads are finding that late-season rhythm that every team hopes for. With back-to-back road wins on Saturday (PSU Mont Alto) and Monday (PSU Wilkes-Barre), the DuBois Lady Lions are finding themselves on the top end of some very satisfying scores. “We really started to see our offense come together in the past few games”, says freshman forward Missy Aul. Even though the teams they faced on the road may not have offered the level of competition the DuBois ladies are accustomed to seeing this season, Aul feels that the squad is finding that level of teamwork and integration that can secure a .500 season or better this year. It certainly showed on the road, with a 71-57 win over PSU Mont Alto and a 71-22 demolition of PSU Wilkes-Barre. “Missy Aul should be player of the week,” notes Lady Lions head coach Pat Lewis. “She was 11-for-11 in the field, with 24 points and 14 rebounds against Wilkes-Barre. Against Mont Alto on Saturday, she had 30 points and 18 rebounds.” The Lady Lions go into action Thursday night (Feb. 7th) against PSUAC western division rival PSU Greater Allegheny at 6:00pm.
The DuBois men’s squad is also finding that late-season momentum that could add up to great things for the postseason. With three road wins in a row (including a 77-69 win over PSU division rival and perennial powerhouse Beaver), the always-focused DuBois men are looking at their road trips Thursday and Sunday with even more determination than usual. Senior guard Dylan Howard notes that as long as DuBois can stay in the top eight teams in the standings (they’re currently at #7), they have a good chance of seeing a USCAA championship bid. The DuBois men will play western division rival PSU Greater Allegheny Thursday night (Feb. 7th) at 8:00, then hit the road for a Sunday matinee against PSUAC North division leader Hazleton. Two more road wins would be that extra boost before USCAA championship bids come out on Monday, February 11th. “The great thing about this situation is that we don’t have to depend on anyone else in the conference to lose or beat anyone else to give us a shot. We hold our destiny in our own hands,” notes Howard.
Indeed, for these talented men and women, it’s a great place to be.

2/4/08 -- All eyes may have been on the University of Phoenix stadium on Sunday night, but it was the Penn State Mont Alto campus that drew the attention of varsity basketball fans on Saturday afternoon, as the PSU DuBois men’s and women’s basketball teams went to work to back-to-back men’s and women’s wins. Pat Lewis’s Lady Lions dominated the entire game, taking the lead at the start and never looking back. Freshman starter Melissa Aul paced the DuBois women with no less than 30 points and 18 rebounds, leading to a 71-57 finish for DuBois. With the win, the DuBois Lady Lions improve to 6-6 on the year (5-6 PSUAC).
When the men took the court for their 3:00 start, they made it clear why they are ranked #6 in the latest USCAA poll. Off to a fast start, the DuBois men would lead by as many as 28 points in the first half, leading to a halftime score of 52-27. Sophomore guard Kevin Genevro paced the Lions with 23 points and 5 assists, while freshman Jimmy Higgins turned in a good day with 11 points and 6 rebounds. The DuBois Nittany Lions now stand at 10-9 overall for the year (7-4 in PSUAC action.)
Inclement weather on Friday led to the postponement of DuBois’ scheduled match against PSU Wilkes-Barre, and so both DuBois squads head back east today (Monday, Feb. 4th) for the makeup. The women play at 6:00pm, and the men follow at 8:00pm.

1/31/08 -- The Penn State DuBois Nittany Lions snapped a two-game losing streak with a hard-fought, emotional win over Penn State Beaver last night in Monaca. The DuBois men got off to a fast start, building a 17-3 lead early, but the talented Beaver offense made a run of their own, cutting the lead to one by the buzzer at the half. In the second half, the DuBois men kept the lead for the entire 20 minutes, bringing home the win 77-69 at the buzzer. “This was a very important game, with both PSUAC and USCAA implications”, said head coach Dave Bennett. Kevin Genevro led the offensive drive on the evening with 25 points, followed by Dylan Howard with 19 and Kyle Vogt with 10. The DuBois Nittany Lions also received great post play from Ryan Hritz (9 points, 6 rebounds), and Jonnny Songer with 7 rebounds.
The Lady Lions also traveled to Beaver last night to face the USCAA third-ranked Beaver team. An early 10-0 lead by Beaver didn’t deter the DuBois women from coming back on a run of their own to make it 12-6. Beaver then went on to show why they lead the PSUAC Western Division , making a 14-0 run and never looking back, defeating DuBois 36-68. Despite the loss, Coach Pat Lewis sees a lot of positive signs in his team, and is looking forward to the rest of the season, with some good matches planned against some teams in the east. “I think we stack up pretty well with a couple of the teams we’ve got in our schedule this month, and I’m pleased with some of the progress we’ve made so far this year,” said Lewis.
The DuBois men and women hit the road tomorrow for a weekend trip, visiting Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Friday night, and Penn State Mont Alto on Saturday. Game time is set for 6pm and 8pm Friday, and 1pm and 3pm on Saturday.
